On the fateful evening of June 21, 2023, at approximately 5:30 pm, a dedicated teacher provided private tutoring to a young student at home when he received a seemingly genuine WhatsApp message from a trusted colleague.
The message came across as an urgent plea for financial assistance, requesting an amount of 20,000 Naira. According to the sender, who claimed to be the teacher’s respected colleague, he was facing a pressing situation where he urgently needed to send money to someone but was encountering difficulties with the transaction.
Trusting the sender’s identity and the long-standing financial assistance the colleague had provided in the past, the teacher impulsively decided to help and promptly sent the requested amount to the provided bank account, belonging to “Adebayo Ojo” at Access Bank, with account number 1710346183. There was a promise to repay the money the following day.
However, merely one minute after the transaction, another message arrived, requesting more money. It was at this moment that the teacher realized he had fallen victim to a scam.
Adding to the unfortunate events, the teacher, who worked at a private school notorious for delayed salary payments, was already facing financial strain. At the time of this incident, he was owed his May salary, and the 20,000 Naira he sent to the scammer happened to be his hard-earned savings designated for paying his October rent.
Acknowledging his hasty actions and the painful consequences that followed, the teacher has come forward to share his harrowing experience, hoping to raise awareness and prevent others from falling victim to similar scams.
Let this serve as a warning to all WhatsApp users to exercise caution when receiving urgent appeals for money and to always verify the authenticity of such requests before making any financial transactions.
