The Gombe Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully prosecuted Yusuf Aminu, securing a three-year jail term from Justice A.M Sambo of the Bauchi State High Court. Aminu faced charges of dishonesty and obtaining by false pretense, having obtained N1.6 million from First City Monument Bank under false pretenses. Despite pleading guilty, he was given the option of a N50,000 fine.
Aminu’s conviction stemmed from a January 2021 incident where he misrepresented the funds as necessary for the improvement of his working capital. Although his defense claimed remorse and restitution, Justice Sambo handed down the sentence.
In a separate case, Dare Dammas Luggard faced six charges related to fraud amounting to N11,550,000. He allegedly induced a victim to deliver N4.5 million under false pretenses, claiming a contract to supply maize to displaced persons. Luggard pleaded not guilty, and the court granted him bail, remanding him in Jos Correctional Centre until bail conditions are met. The trial is set to continue on March 19, 2024.
