The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended Adeniyi Abiodun James, the general overseer (GO) of CAC Freedom City Prophetic and Deliverance Ministry, located in Ilorin, Kwara state, on charges of defrauding a congregant.
According to Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, James was arrested on April 2 following a petition filed by Oluwole Babarinsa, a member of the church.
Babarinsa accused the GO of swindling him out of N3,980,000.
In his complaint, Babarinsa alleged that during a church service in 2021, the pastor prophesied about his imminent trip abroad.
He claimed that after expressing his desire to travel to Canada, the pastor assured him of assistance, claiming to have a contact in Lagos who could facilitate the process for N1.7 million, with an additional N2.5 million for flight tickets and travel documents.
Babarinsa stated that he raised the required funds through the sale of assets and loans, which he handed over to the pastor for the purported relocation to Canada.
“Despite repeated requests for updates and refunds, the petitioner received no satisfactory response from the suspect,” the statement revealed.
Oyewale mentioned that upon the completion of investigations, the suspect would face prosecution in court.
