My cousin (name withheld), who resides in the US, fell victim to this con artist, whose real name is reportedly William. His modus operandi involves targeting unsuspecting and vulnerable women by posing as a compassionate confidant.
William slid into my cousin’s DMs and built a friendly relationship over several months (4-5 months). He earned her trust by feigning empathy and support. Eventually, he fabricated a crisis, claiming that his Bitcoin wallet had been hacked and contained sensitive materials. Desperate for help, he requested N3,000,000 from her to hire IT specialists to regain access.
Moved by compassion and unaware of his deceit, my cousin transferred the funds to three different SportyNet accounts provided by the fraudster:
- 6052116014 (Wema Bank)
- 6052071496 (Wema Bank)
- 6052022395 (Wema Bank)
Shortly after receiving the money, the scammer blocked her on Instagram, WhatsApp, and all other communication channels.
Days later, he attempted to scam my cousin’s friend using the same approach. The friend, who was aware of the previous scam, exposed his deceptive tactics by sharing screenshots of their conversation. The scammer claims to be based in South Africa.
