I was scammed by a man named Ajayi Olaoluwa Daniel, a Yoruba man based in Lagos State, Nigeria, who claimed to be a travel agent helping people secure scholarships to study abroad, particularly in Canada and the United States.
In September 2024, I got his contact from someone I met online — a white man based in Australia, who I believed was a friend. Initially, this online friend promised to sponsor my travel plans, but later withdrew. Determined to pursue my Master’s degree, I decided to go ahead and contact Ajayi directly.
Daniel requested a ₦50,000 registration fee to begin the process. He said he would process applications to two universities — one in Canada and one in the USA. Between October 2024 and January 2025, I paid him a total of ₦1.7 million for various charges he claimed were needed for admission and visa processing.
However, in late January, I began to grow suspicious. I asked repeatedly to see my student portal access, but he kept refusing. He provided me with an admission letter from a Canadian university (University of Saskatchewan – USASK), and my instincts told me to verify it.
I finally contacted USASK’s admissions office, and they confirmed my worst fear — the admission letter was fake, and no offer of admission existed in my name.
When I confronted Daniel, he kept lying, insisting everything was fine. But by June, when I openly demanded a refund and informed him I had confirmed the scam, he cut off all communication, stopped picking my calls, and ignored my messages.
I had even met him once in person in Lagos, when he took me to get a fake police clearance report — everything was staged. I never knew his residential address or a real office location.
What hurts the most is that I trusted him because his contact was given to me by someone I was in a relationship with — my so-called friend from Australia, who has since refused to respond to my messages about the scam. I now wonder if they both were in on it.
