A resident of Lagos State has recently shared her ordeal of being defrauded by Katu Phones and Computers Ltd., an Instagram vendor specializing in phone and computer accessories. The victim paid a sum of N248,500 for the purchase of an iPhone 12 but never received the promised phone.
The trouble began when the victim, unable to afford the full price upfront, decided to make a N50,000 deposit payment on March 15. By the end of the month, she paid the remaining N198,500 balance.
However, immediately after the final payment was made, the vendor blocked her from contacting them through phone calls or messages.
Furthermore, she discovered that she had been blocked on WhatsApp when attempting to reach out to the vendor.
Realizing she was dealing with a fraudster, the victim’s subsequent efforts to recover her money proved fruitless.
She approached her bank to inquire about the possibility of retrieving the funds sent to the Zenith Bank account provided by the vendor. Despite writing a request letter to recall the money, the victim has yet to see any successful recovery.
It is suspected that the vendor swiftly emptied the account upon receiving the payment. To make matters worse, a significant portion of the money stolen from the victim constituted her salary for the entire first quarter.
During an investigation, it was revealed that the Zenith Bank account number 2284219815 used by the owner of Katu Phones and Computers Ltd., who goes by the name ‘Hellen Akhabue,’ was involved in the fraudulent activity.
Attempts to contact the vendor for comments on the matter through multiple phone calls, text messages, and WhatsApp have gone unanswered. Moreover, a recent visit to the vendor’s Instagram page showed that they were still advertising the sale of iPhone 7 phones as of March 13.
