A fraudulent Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recruitment portal has been circulating on social media and mobile messaging apps such as WhatsApp.
On Thursday, the CBN issued a statement denying ongoing recruitment and distancing itself from the portal.
According to the CBN, the recruitment portal is a forgery, and any information released could be exploited.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) attention has been drawn to a fake recruitment portal inviting ‘eligible’ members of the public to submit applications in an exercise that will begin soon,” the statement read in part.
“The fraudulent website lists eligibility requirements, which include, among other things, the possession of a Bank Verification Number” (BVN). The portal goes on to say that people with physical disabilities are not eligible to apply.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN is currently not conducting any general recruitment exercise and will never request the BVN of intending applicants or discriminate against persons with physical disabilities.”
“As a result, members of the public are hereby warned to be wary of fraudulent recruitment agents intent on taking advantage of the employment challenge to defraud eligible applicants, particularly young graduates.”
CBN statement condemning the fraudulent recruitment portal
This is the latest in a string of fraudulent job postings linked to a government agency or ministry.
Fraudsters send website links and URLs that lead victims to divulge sensitive information such as bank account numbers.
