An unidentified individual is posing as Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and sending deceptive emails to unsuspecting individuals, promising to distribute stolen $18 million among them.
On February 15, an email originating from the address ‘[email protected]’ was dispatched to multiple recipients, one of whom engaged with FIJ regarding the matter.
According to the informant, the email was received with other recipients blind-copied, bearing the subject line ‘Urgent Reply Please’.
In the email’s body, the sender falsely identifies themselves as Emefiele, citing legal issues and proposing to transfer $18 million from their domiciliary account to the recipient’s, purportedly for safekeeping, with a promise to split the sum equally afterwards.
The message states, “My name is Mr. Godwin Emefiele, aged 62, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. As you may have heard or seen in international news, I am currently detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) and facing charges by the current Nigerian government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“I have a highly confidential business proposition concerning the US$18,000,000.00 deposited in my domiciliary account with a reputable international bank.
“As the DSS’s investigation progresses, I wish for the mentioned amount to be transferred to your name as the new beneficiary to avoid detection. I am prepared to evenly distribute the funds with you once you have secured it successfully.
“Please revert for further details and the necessary steps if you are interested.
“Regards,
“Mr. Godwin Emefiele.”
An analysis of the sender’s email address reveals the presence of ‘atm’, ‘visa’, and ‘card’, but no indication of association with Emefiele.
Since leaving his post, Emefiele has faced allegations including possession of weapons, treason, forgery, and corruption.
