The police in Damaturu nabbed three people for tricking four locals in Yobe, making off with over N81 million worth of food grains.
The suspects, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed (44), Sunday Ezra Haruna (35), and Ishaku Abdulsalam (40), are accused of pretending to be part of a charity and fooling farmers into giving them grains for camps without paying on the spot.
According to the Yobe State Police spokesperson, Dungus Abdulkarim, the arrests came after a complaint from Ibrahim Mohammed and Abubakar Usman. They said Mohammed Modu got 180 bags of maize worth N7.4 million but didn’t pay as agreed.
The suspects posed as charity workers, convincing victims to sell without immediate payment, promising to pay later after delivering the grains to certain places. They claimed it was for donating to a camp for displaced people.
After the delivery, the suspects told the victims to wait for payment, but they secretly sold the grains for less without telling the victims. Then, they disappeared with the money, leaving the victims waiting without any way to contact them.
The victims mentioned include Mohammed Modu, who lost N7.4 million worth of maize, Ibrahim Mohammed, and Abubakar Usman, who lost N22 million worth of maize. Also affected were Alhaji Arma Yau Yahaya from Bauchi State, losing N29.995 million worth of rice, and Ishaku Salihu Chaptu from Mangu, Plateau State, losing N22 million worth of maize.
