A corps member from Ondo State has described how a fake Paga Facebook page called Pagatech defrauded her of N40,000.
When the Ondo state corps member discovered the page on Facebook, she was informed that they were running a P.O.S. deployment promotion. She spoke with the number they provided on WhatsApp again and was told to go create a Paga account on her own before a PoS acquisition.
“The handler of the Facebook page stated that once the account was opened, they would send a PoS terminal to her for free.” She funded the paga account with N40,000 naira after creating the account and entering all of her information, including a valid form of identification.”
She was also told via WhatsApp that the terminal that would be assigned to her was being set up.
” The corps member was also told that she would be sent a code via SMS while the configuration was being completed.
“The man who spoke to her then told her to send the code to him once she received it.” Throughout this time, she never had reason to suspect that it was a fraud.
“The corp member forwarded the message to him after receiving it.” She would not have forwarded the code she received to him if she had known it was an OTP for her account.
“As soon as he received the OTP, he instructed the corp member not to log in to her Paga account so she wouldn’t disrupt the configuration.”
The corp members became suspicious and attempted to log in to her paga account several times without success.
“She later received a message from Paga stating that her account had been temporarily blocked for 30 minutes.”
“When she finally logged into the paga account, she discovered that her N40,000 naira had vanished.” She had no idea she was dealing with a fraudster. The little money she was able to save as a corps member is now gone.
Further investigation revealed that the N40,000 naira stolen from the corps member’s account was transferred to an OPay account owned by Mary Owojokun Sunday.
The fraudster also used the phone numbers 09117099479 and 07012554275 to defraud the corps member. On Truecaller, both numbers displayed the names ‘Paga Tech’ and ‘Paga Finance’.
Both numbers were called several times but were never answered.
